# Nell, when you think about concerts? —> WIth a cold glass of beer!

Hello. This is Nell’s vocalist, Kim Jong-wan. I debated for a long time over what I should say, how I should say it. But, without any decoration and without any exaggeration, I’ve decided just to show you ourselves as we are.

Would you like to hear? Haha.

Our first performance was in March 1999 at a small live club in Hong-dae. I don’t remember it clearly, but I’m sure that it was rather awful. Mmm … but because there was only one person in the audience? I don’t think we really inconvenienced him. Haha.

At that time, most bands would cover songs (they’d take an existing song and re-interpret it in their own style and use them as most of their songs when performing). That was the policy for performing then, so I don’t know what kind of audacity we had, but we performed our own songs that no one knew. It might have been because of that, but, whenever we finished, the expressions of the club owners were always dark. We didn’t get paid much, and, after we finished, they’d give us [non-alcoholic] beverages, and, as we were thinking, “Mmm, this isn’t it,” they switched out the grape-flavoured drink and gave us beer. “Ahh, we should work hard,” we thought.

That’s how we continued performing in live clubs for two, three more years.

After we released our first major album Let It Rain, we were able to create performances in a more organized system. Of course, compared to now, the scale was smaller, but … even so, it was the first time that we worked with other staff members other than ourselves to plan our performance. At first, it was uncomfortable, and we felt that it was hard to work with people, but we were able to learn about things beyond music, like lighting, video, the flow of a performance, etcetera. The things we learned then are helping us even now as we plan our concert.

That’s how our performances started, and it’s been our biggest motivation until now!

★ Wait! How did Nell become a team?

I met Jae-kyung and Jae-won in middle school, but we became close as third-years in high school*. At that time, I’d just returned from Switzerland, and, interestingly enough, at that time, Jae-kyung was playing the guitar, and Jae-won was playing the drums. And, to add to that, because Jae-kyung’s older brother and my older brother were very close friends, I think Jae-kyung and I were able to grow closer faster. (As far as I remember, I think we met every day to talk about music?)

So I would see them everyday, and, as 1998 was coming to a close, through my school friends, I was able to meet beginner bassist, Jung-hoon, and I got the impression that he was an introverted friend. But, at the time, when I saw his boldness in wearing a hair-band and layered fluorescent-colored shirts, I thought, “What’s with him?” Haha.

# Concerts are our strength —> the interval between openness and privacy

Concert? Venue? I think it’s where we have our most private conversations in the most open space.

Because we have to stand in front of several thousands, sometimes several ten thousands, of people, it seems like we’d have to project an image that’s very well-cultivated and created and, if you look at it one way, artificial, but, at the very least, a concert is something that provides us the time and space to be ourselves without any embellishment.

Ah, of course, except for make-up and hair!

A concert is different from a televised program. On a music program, we only have to sing one song, but, at a concert, because we have to digest twenty, thirty songs, we have to prepare psychologically, physically. However! The moment we stand on stage, because we receive the energy of those who attend, I feel like it’s work that lets us recharge our energy as musicians.

The truth is, as we undergo this and that experience, there are times we feel like living as musicians, and, also, as a band, feels beyond our control, but, when we see a venue filled with concertgoers, I naturally think, “Ah, I’ve really been blessed.” In moments like that, it’s just regrettable that I can’t remember each person’s look and expression.

# Christmas? —> a day we perform!

Around Christmas, and, also, the end of the year, I think all sorts of feelings well up all tangled up. Is it just me? With the cold winter air and the joyfully lit city, when darkness falls, the many lights that become brighter and the sounds of music filtering from here and there make me feel conflicting emotions like warmth and desolation, loving-kindness and loneliness, anticipation toward the new year that approaches again and regret towards the year that’s ending.

Excluding the four years we were on hiatus because of mandatory military service, we’ve always spent Christmas performing. 2012 is of course the same. We’ve decided that, now that we’re active again, we’d spend this year with this kind of new feeling by holding our “Christmas in Nell’s Room” again.

I don’t know, but it could be that we’ve all been anxiously waiting for the warm cheer mixed with the cold winter air. And that we wanted to share the feelings mentioned above with different people. Whatever happens, when I’ve shared something I’m feeling with someone, I’ll be able to feel warmth for the first time, so I’m certain that this Christmas won’t be a cold day.

When I look at the lovers who come to the concert, I might feel jealous, but … what about it! I just have to look at the solo attendees who’ve come embracing their Christmas Eve loneliness and set myself free! I don’t worry about it~ haha.

Especially because we’ll be wrapping up this year with a concert in Busan on the last day of 2012, I’m really glad that it seems like this December won’t be just a lonely one.

To be honest, as much as this concert is one that we’re holding while resuming activities, we’ve raised the ball. More than previous stages we’ve shown you, we’ve been investing in a lot of sound, lighting, and video equipment, so the process of preparing itself has become very complicated.

Every time a staff meeting ends, I feel more tired than when we’ve finished one concert. But isn’t it enough that there are so many staff members who are working so many months for one day’s performance and that so many people are waiting for the moment we stand on stage? There’s no chance to be tired.

The kind of concert I want to show fans? Personally, I don’t really like eating at concerts. So putting aside taste, I want to hold a concert that satisfies the remaining [senses], sight, hearing, touch, smell. I want to create a stage in a place where you can see the ocean in the background with the forest inside and start the performance at sundown, and I think I could satisfy sight and smell that way, and, for touch … if I borrowed the strength of mosquitoes? Haha. Hearing will obviously be our music!

so, back in april, nell guested on choi kang-hee’s radio program, and i was intending to translate the whole thing, but i was scrolling through it and decided i didn’t want to do that because (01) it’s really long and (02) i’m not a fan of small talk. so i went through and translated the parts i thought were interesting or fun, which is presented for you here below! i tried to put in some context here and there, but you can see where i sort of gave up … har.

<small talk/greeting each other/&c>

Kang-hee (KH): Around what time do you sleep?

Jong-wan (JW): I sleep whenever. When my head hurts, I sleep.

KH: Ah.

JW: But, I think I usually tend to wait until my head hurts.

KH: Does your head hurt often?

JW: I don’t think there’s been at time I went to sleep thinking I should sleep well. And I can’t fall asleep easily. So, you know how, when you’re really sleepy, your head starts to hurt – then I sleep very well. So, sometimes, there are times when I’m awake for two, three days …

KH: Ah, really?

JW: Yes …

KH: (deadpan) [What an] artist.

(laughter)

JW: I’m really not.

(laughter)

JW: It’s really not like that. Because, to me, time is precious.

KH: When your head’s working, then you can’t sleep.

Jung-hoon (JH): Exactly.

KH: So your head must be working constantly.

JH: He’s like that, then, when he does fall asleep, he tends to sleep for the whole day.

KH: It must be hard for you, and I jokingly called you an artist before but … it makes you cool, doesn’t it?

JW: Not at all.

JH: It’s hard for him. Even though he’s tired, I think it’s natural for him.

KH: When you sleep, have you ever tried taking sleeping pills or anything?

JW: Yes. But they don’t really have much of an effect.

KH: Do you three sleep well?

Jae-won (JJW): I tend to sleep very well.

JW: He sleeps very well.

JJW: Because my head doesn’t really work that well …

KH: I see.

JJW: I can fall asleep in an instant.

JH: I think I’m normal. If I sleep a lot, then I sleep nine hours; if I sleep a little, then four hours – like that. I try to sleep at least that amount every day.

KH: If you sleep four hours regularly, that’s not a lot. The standard for a person is six hours.

JH: But, because there are times I sleep ten hours, so …

KH: (missed her response)

JH: Because it replenishes me.

KH: I see. Do you sleep well, Jae-Kyung?

Jae-kyung (JK): No. I sleep in the morning. I’m always tired. Because I slept in the morning … though I heard you should sleep when it’s dark …

KH: Right?

JK: Yes. Because I usually fall asleep in the morning …

KH: And it feels like you’re walking around asleep during the day …

KH: I feel like you’ll be performing so you’re less tired.

JW: That’s what we’re trying to do.

KH: Ah ..

JW: We felt this way since a while ago, but, to be honest, there are times we have to do things we don’t want. But doing music in itself is, if you look at it one way, it’s not an ordinary job, and, because it’s something we do because we want to do it, because we think we shouldn’t go out and forcibly do something we don’t want to … although we’re those who ask us or to our managers or people at our company, I think we’re leaning towards only doing what we want and what we can do well.

<talking about some generic music program they appeared on where it snowed, and KH says something about how it was nice/surprising to see snow in April but that it’s expected to see snow with Nell, and I think JK laughs and says that it wasn’t snow but foam.>

JK: We really like programs where we can perform live, but programs where we have to pretend to play are …

JH: … very …

KH: Because you actually have to play.

JH: We’re grateful and feel like those programs are necessary, but, when we’re there, it’s hard …

JW & JK: It’s uncomfortable.

KH: Do you like to look those up? (like fan blogs, fan cafes, etc)

JK: Yes, I tend to look for them. How people are thinking.

KH: (didn’t get this this)

JK: No, but I just browse them for fun. Whether it’s something good or something bad.

KH: Do people write negative things?

JK: They do.

KH: About this album?

JK: There are [negative comments] about the music, too, but there are comments like, “Why did he gain so much weight?” {laughs) I try to take negative comments about our music objectively when I see them. How did they assess it, how did they explain it – I’m interested in that.

KH: What do they say?

JK: They say it’s good. (laughs) Maybe I read everything from good point-of-view? I don’t know at any rate.

<talking about how KH got the album; they ask her what tracks she likes; she starts listing a lot; I think JH jokes that she must not have listened to it>

KH: But, the most surprising thing was the title of the first track – The Ending?

Nell: Yes.

KJ: So, like, in the middle of a separation or in the midst of an ending, like that …?

JW: I think I wrote it as a story of an ending. Not like the middle of a farewell. The contents of the song are …

KH: Painful.

JW: (laughs hesitantly) I think we know when something’s come to its end. So, this song is about a man-woman relationship, but I think, to a certain point, we know when a relationship has reached the end.

KH: Mm, that’s true. There’s a feeling.

JW: When it ends, even if we don’t say it to each other, and the deeper that relationship is, and, in addition, the longer the relationship has lasted, I thought that the time we don’t say that to each other become longer. So it’s a song that has to do with that.

KH: Which is why I was curious because the title feels like the end. But it’s the first track?

JW: Mm, yes.

KH: Is there a reason you arranged it that way?

JW: Just … first of all, when we were working on it, we had talked a lot about how we’d want it [The Ending] to be the first track on our CD. The song is in 7/8 time, and that can be an unfamiliar time signature, but, rather, because of that, I thought it should be the first track. Because the first track … you have to listen to it.

KH: Right?

JW: Yes. If the harder tracks are at the end of the CD, I thought that there would be people who wouldn’t listen to them.

<more talking>

KH: This track [In Days Gone By] is brighter than I thought it would be, yes?

JJW: The rhythm is a bit …

KH: Don’t people say it’s not like Nell?

JH: No one’s really said that.

KH: Ah, they haven’t!

(laughter)

KH: So my manager’s the only one who said that! When the track came on, he said, “Ah, this, nuna, is this Nell, too?”

JK: I think it’s a bright track in there. In our album.

KH: It felt very fresh.

JK: Thank you.

KH: Who has the lightest personality? The brightest?

JK: Drummer Jae-Won.

JW: Yes.

JK: Yes.

JW: Yes. Because my hair’s gotten long … it’s annoying and keeps getting in my eyes.

KH: Ah, I see. I heard that Jung-hoon wrote a song for Taru.

JH: Ah! Ah, yes, I did.

KH: When I’m feeling sort of lonely or when my heart feels like there’s a hole in it, it comforts me. Like that.

Nell: Ah …

JH: That’s nice.

KH: Sadness, despair, loneliness, longing – your famous for expressing these things through delicate sounds and vocals. That’s what it says there. There are lots of articles like this, but, when you’re in a good mood, do you feel like this all the time?

(laughter)

KH: Do you feel like the song? Like your albums?

JW: Not always. When the four of us are together or when we’re with old friends, it’s really fun. We’re really funny and have funny times and enjoy ourselves, but …

KH: When you split up, you can’t sleep, and …

JW: But, as it is, for the most part, I write songs when I’m alone. So I think that’s why … yeah …

KH: To be honest, I wanted to ask this, but I don’t know if it might be rude … Jong-wan, do you write most of the lyrics?

JW: Yes.

KH: You do, right?

JW: Yes.

KH: When I listen from your first album, I think, Ah, how many times has this person been hurt? To be honest, several thousands of different things can from the same situation depending on the person. Excuse me …

(laughter)

KH: What do you think?

JW: But … besides that … a song could sound like it’s about love, but I think there are lots of songs that aren’t about love. And …

KH: Ah, not at all —

JW: Yes, but, in this album, there are a lot of songs bout love.

KH: Were you in love?

JW: Yes … well, I fell in love, and I also broke up. So … but, instead of saying that I’ve had too much experience, I think I tend to be the type to date someone for a long time. If I date someone, I date for a long time … because I was in that kind of situation … I guess there were obviously a lot of things I’d feel, after we broke up?

KH: Mm …

JW: There are a lot of things that come to mind … and lots of things I regret. Mm, so it could be because of that?

KH: Ah …

JW: But, well, I didn’t just have weird relationships like that. (laughs)

JH: At least you have weird relationships.

KH: How badly did he do that he’d write such sad songs, I thought.

JW: Ah, like how badly did I treat a woman? Ah .. there are things I did well and things I didn’t.

KH: Ah, so, when I watched TV, I thought, Ah, he must be a very charming guy.

JW: I do think I have a little charm.

KH: Are there any songs that came from any ridiculous complaints?

JW: Not on this album, but we have a song called Could You Please Shut Up for a Minute. But … it wasn’t from a ridiculous complaint, but, just, for some reason, the words just stuck with the melody. But, to be honest, the phrase, Could you please shut up for a minute, don’t fit very easily to music lyrics, but it did. And it’s not like really strong cursing … and because the song itself bounces, so I think we had a lot of fun making it. If you look at the content one way, you could say that it’s strong, but, because the music tempers that, because the music bounces lightly … I think we had a lot of fun working on it then.

KH: I see. I heard that, even when you’re recording, if you don’t like a song, you throw it away.

Nell: Yes.

KH: Then the songs that were rejected as title tracks …

JK: Those are songs we’ve pushed aside to perfect them more, but there are lots of songs we completely discarded while recording.

KH: Ah.

JH (JJW?): It’s really sad, isn’t it?

KH: You could probably just leave them.

JK: That is, if we fill our discography with songs for selfish reasons, then the level of perfection of a really important album falls. So there are lots of songs that simply fall out because it can’t be helped.

KH: Ah. How about this album? Do you like it a lot?

JW: With any album … I think it’s the same … I think I try really hard, and, when I’m working, I think that this is my best, but, when it’s over, there’s always some regret – I think a lot of regret is left. And, because of that, I think I become determined for the next album, the next record. Of course, there are lots of things I like, but we – I personally have things I regret, so … well, there are good things and bad things.

KH: But, the thing you can’t really expect is that, there are lots of songs that fans like more than you think.

JW: Yes. I don’t know if it’s that my personality is kind of rude … (laughs) About things like that – I don’t think I really go back and forth over things like that. So, if I don’t like something, even if others say it’s good, I still don’t like it, and, if I like it and others say they don’t, I still like it. Of course, I’m really grateful to those who like it.

KH: I see.

JW: And that’s when I think, Ah, has this song been blessed? a lot.

<talking about recording at Avatar Studios>

KH: Was it a good experience? Were you really excited?

JK: I really liked it. Because … they’re the best musicians. We’re a band, but they’re the best of the best in the classical world, and there was a lot we could learn. Particularly, their performance and their attitude toward music were very awesome.

JH: It was a very dream-like time.

JW: From the moment we entered, right when we went into the recording studio, the records and CDs that were recorded there are displayed. And there were musicians we really admire there, so, Ah, we’re really here; we’re accomplished another thing – that kind of feeling? When we were young, when high school students would gather to form bands, ah, we want to go record in a studio like that, in a recording studio abroad – we’d have those kinds of dreams. We want to go perform here.

KH: (missed what she says)

JW: As these dreams are being achieved one-by-one … we’ve been going for ten-some years without changing members, just ourselves, as friends. It felt really good, like a movie.

KH: You should carry a video camera around with you at all times and record it.

(laughter)

KH: Because you don’t know what will happen later. Shall we listen to two more tracks from the album? Standing in the Rain and Cliff Parade – could you tell us something about them?

JW: Standing in the Rain is the track drummer Jung Jae-won wanted as our title track.

KH: We’ll listen to it well.

JW: And Cliff Parade is the most rock-like on this album, but, when the album first came out, surprisingly, a lot of people said they liked it best. So we really felt that people in our country are full of passion, so we prepared these two songs.

KH: You must have no reason to fight.

JK; We fought a lot.

(laughter)

KH: I feel like it’d be like a couple’s fight.

JK: Our fights are worse than a couple’s fight. But, because we fought a lot when we were younger, I think we don’t have many reasons to fight now.

KH: That’s nice. So now, we don’t have much time life, so I don’t know what I should ask … you held your comeback concert?

Nell: Yes.

KH: How was it? Was it good?

JW: Yes. To be honest, I worried a lot if it weren’t too hard from the beginning – to be honest, a concert requires a lot of preparation, and there are lots of songs, but, after we did it, looking back, I think it was good that we started with a concert. That there were people who waited for us for a long four years, that a lot of people waited for us and because we were able to receive energy from them – I think it was really good.

KH: People say this a lot about you, right? That you’re famous for not saying much during concerts …

JK: Ah.

JH: But, for the most part …

KH: That you just sing … say that it’s the next track then sing then go on to another song – that’s what people say.

JH: Well, it can’t be helped that we — if you come to our concert, you’ll know, but because they like our music more than us talking …

KH: Ah, the fans?

Nell: Yes.

KH: The fans — do they say that?

JH: Yes. Because it’s not a talking concert.

KH: But, Jong-wan, you hosted a radio show before, right?

JW: Yes.

KH: What did you host?

JW: It was on KBS D&B. Called “Cruel Radio.”

KH: I see.

JW: Yes.

KH: Was it very cruel? The way you spoke …

JW: No, no. I like to talk, but, because it’s a concert venue, and, honestly, I try to get the most for the ticket prices, and the fans didn’t come to hear me talk, so I think it’s better to show them the best and let them hear the best.

KH: Ah, that’s good. You’re very subjective.

(laughter)

KH: But, people are like this: when people start to like a song and start to like a singer, at first, they just like the music. But, then, they start getting curious about all sorts of things.

JW: Ah, for example ..?

KH: What they wear to sleep …

KH: What they ate. What they like, besides music.

JH: Nowadays, those personal …

KH: Not that I do … but anyone can be like that, even a little. Wanting to know what people wore is a little over the tope, but you want to like what they like and want to feel closer to them that way. Just saying.

JK: I think there are instances like that. Because you like a song, you tweet about it a lot, but I have a hyung who’s a musician I really respect. Because he tweeted so much, he kind of (lost the rest of what he said because they all started laughing).

KH: There really are situations like that. Do you four [tweet]?

JK: I don’t, but the other members …

JW: Yes, but I don’t think I tweet a lot. It’s hard. Do you?

KH: Yes.

JW: Ah. Do you … do you do it a lot?

KH: Well … when I say a lot, I say a lot, but I think just tweet as it comes.

Nell: Mm.

KH: Lastly … when you were recording in New York, you said you felt like you were achieving your dreams one-by-one. Are there any other dreams you want to achieve, whether it’s with your next album or in the future together? Goals?

JW: I think we still have so many …

KH: Something you can share.

JW: Mm. I think, after all, performing abroad or holding a concert …

KH: I see.

JW: This song is … in my opinion, I wonder if the lyrics aren’t the most directly related to love. As we worked on this album, I think I was struggling with something and that this is expressing one of those emotions. This song is – instead of losing something – as we live, we lose a lot of things, but, before, I used to be afraid of losing things … but, rather than losing things, forgetting things? And things I’m forgetting. I found myself thinking, The things I forget are even sadder, a lot. So, as I was writing the lyrics, I think this song made me think a lot even as I was writing the lyrics by myself. As I was writing, [thinking] about myself on my own … so I wanted to play this song for you.
